I'm not a big fan of the snow, at least not when I have to deal with the clean-up. But being a half-full glass kinda guy I do enjoy one aspect of it. Whenever there's a local weather event it seems to drive the community towards social media. I've been having a blast actively communicating with people in my community via Twitter, Facebook and Google plus. All driven there with the common theme of talking about the weather.

Now if we can only hold that enthusiasm when we're not stuck inside.

Those of you that follow me may have already picked up that I'm quickly growing a little side business performing IT services for small businesses and independent contractors. I'm now quickly learning these security DVRs are just as easy to troubleshot and install not to mention that I typically charge much less than a dedicated security company would.

And jump into Middle Earth for a while but apparently there has been a fairly sizable update since the last time I've played! I find the actual LOTO website a bit hard to navigate but I did try to get a quick rundown of what have changed with no luck. Guess I'm going to ride it out and find out first hand. Been playing almost a year now... I love this game!

After spending years taking bits and pieces of David Allens Getting Things Done methodology I decided it's about time I actually sat down and read the book end to end.

Since "time" is my issue, I'm opting to read it on the Google Nexus S when I have time. I've never really used the Google eBook format before so this will hopefully lead to another blog post as well.

Thailand Flooding Makes one thing Solid State

In a recent conversation with my vendor I was told to be prepared for hard drive price increases upward of 60%. The first thing that crossed my mind was that this would bring mechanical drives right in line with solid state devices. This could be the ticket to drive the prices of the solid state devices downward and may be the beginning of the end for traditional drives.

2011 will likely be remembered as the year of natural disasters. The earthquake and tsunami that rocked Japan, a more recent earthquake in Turkey, Hurricane Irene even left a huge mark on our home state of Vermont. One of the latest environmental emergencies is having a direct impact on the PC industry. Thailand has been enduring major flooding as a result of a monsoon since July and over the past few weeks numerous reports have emerged concerning manufacturing facilities for hard disk drives and their sub components. Western Digital in particular has seen one of their largest manufacturing facilities shut down entirely due to these floods.

Tasker for Android is the Cats Ass!

I've always had the urge to do some tweaking to my Google Nexus S Android phone but quite frankly I hung up my programming hat in the days of DOS with QuickBasic 4.5.

While Tasker isn't technically a programming language it is an advanced utility that allows you to script virtually every action of your Android device based on many different contexts that it is aware of.

I wrote two scripts today, one recognizes when I pull into my local McDonald's restaurant where I like to sit in the parking lot at my laptop during lunch. It first logs me into Foursquare and updates my location then turns on the WiFi hotspot function on my phone so I can surf with my laptop. When I pull away, it shut off the hotspot.

The second app I created watches my Google Calendar and reads the location field of my appointments. If it sees that I'm in the meeting room then it puts my phone in DND mode routing all calls to my Google Voice mail and changes my default greeting to one that says I'm in a meeting. All sounds are then disabled and it even sends out a Tweet saying I'm off the grid for a while. When the meeting is over everything is reversed. Now how cool is that?
